This rare stand was designed to support a 'pagoda-shaped' jar: an ovoid vessel with a tall, tiered cover. Such jars, produced mainly in northern China, are known to rest on a variety of supports, most commonly lotus bases, though examples with animals such as elephants, and more rarely lions, are also recorded.
