Terkild Emmanuel Lønning (1762–1823) was a Danish marine painter and draftsman who became the official artist of the Royal Danish Navy. After working at sea in his youth, he was appointed in 1790 as a draftsman at Holmens Modelkammer, where he documented naval vessels and significacnt events. These included the frigate Freya's defence of a convoy in 1800. He also created ship portraits for organisations like the Asiatic Company. Working mainly in gouache, his detailed and dynamic works were often reproduced as engravings, contributing valuable visual records of Denmark's naval history during the Napoleonic era.

The inscription of the present work identifies the four ships at anchor as the naval vessel Infods Retten, commanded by Captain Gerner; the Danish East Indiaman Kongen af Danmark, and Disco; and the Swedish East Indiaman Findland. They are pictured at anchor off the island of Fayal, in the Azores (some 1,000 miles west of Lisbon) en route between Scandinavia and China.
