George Chinnery (1774-1852) moved to Macau in 1825 at the age of 51, where he immersed himself in the vibrant daily life and distinctive architecture of the Portuguese enclave. Though he had sent no works to the Royal Academy between 1803 and 1830, his return to exhibiting in 1830, while based in China, marked a shift toward portraiture.
Chinnery often ventured into Macau's streets, capturing scenes in pencil and ink before developing them into finished watercolours or oils in his studio. Even these completed works, however, remained modest in scale, a choice influenced by both aesthetic and practical considerations. The confined living quarters of his Western clientele, merchants, doctors, and military officers, favoured smaller artworks.
The present work shows a sketch in pencil with a detail from the composition enlarged and elaborated in ink below showing a concern and fascination for the intricacies of the architecture of Macau.
Compare to a pen and ink study of S. Dominigo illustrated in Fan Kwae pictures: paintings and drawings by George Chinnery and other artists in the collection of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, London, 1987, p.28, no.33.
