Footnotes

A lawyer by profession but an artist by vocation, Thomas Churchyard devoted his life to recording the landscapes of his native Suffolk. Closely associated with the Norwich School and influenced by John Constable, his subjects range from intimate tree and riverbank sketches to broader rural and coastal views around Woodbridge, where he lived and worked for most of his career.

Though he never gained national fame in his lifetime, Churchyard was a prolific painter whose works were preserved by his large family and later widely dispersed. Today his paintings are represented in the Tate, British Museum, Ashmolean Museum, and Norwich Castle.
