Footnotes

Lord Glenconner presented Lady Glenconner with a cockatoo from Harrods, a charming gesture that quickly took a turn. The bird, grandly christened Cocky, proved to be both adored and appalling: affectionate one moment, anarchic the next. After wreaking sufficient havoc, Cocky was unceremoniously returned to Harrods, where in a final indignity, Lord Glenconner had to pay them to take the feathered menace back. The above lot was then given to Lady Glenconner as an easier replacement.
