Footnotes

These are the impaled arms and crest of the STANLEY family of Bickerstaffe, Lancashire. This family has two identifiable collateral lines, one of Cross Hall, Lancashire and another that incudes the title of Earls of Derby. An exhaustive examination of the pedigree of the STANLEY family appears to rule out the Cross Hall line but it is difficult to confidently identify the marriage that links the arms of the Earldom of Derby to the maternal arms on this armorial, which remain unidentified. The arms contain no coronet and we must assume that the owner is a descendant of the Earls of Derby, unfortunately there is no mark of cadency that would assist. As the maternal arms cannot be identified in any UK indexes we can only assume that they represent some continental family.

The blazon: argent, on a bend azure three bucks' heads cabossed or (Stanley) – impaling – per quarterly ermine and azure, the second and third quarters charged with a cross patonce argent (?).

The crest: on a chapeau gules turned up ermine, an eagle wings extended or, preying upon an infant in its cradle proper swaddled gules and laced with gold (Stanley).
