Footnotes

Claude-Charles Saunier, maître 1752.

Claude-Charles Saunier (1735–1807) was born into a family of cabinetmakers based in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Paris. Over his long and distinguished career, he produced furniture in the Transitional, Louis XVI, and Directoire styles. Working through the celebrated marchand-mercier Daguerre, Saunier supplied exquisite pieces to the French royal residences at Versailles and Choisy. His creations are renowned for their superbly crafted gilt-bronze mounts and the meticulous selection of veneers, which often play a central role in the overall aesthetic composition, as beautifully exemplified by the above lot.
