Footnotes

The Roxburghe Club, founded in 1812, is the oldest society of bibliophiles in the world with a limited membership of 40. As tradition dictates, each member must present to the Club a published and bound book on a subject of scholarly importance of their choosing.

For his membership, the Hon. Thomas Coke, 5th Earl of Leicester chose to focus on the library of Holkham Hall which contains over 10,000 rare books and around 550 manuscripts. The library includes medieval copies of the Magna Carter and illuminated Renaissance manuscripts.
