Footnotes

Sir Charles James Napier was born in 1782, and was the eldest son of Colonel George Napier and his second wife, Lady Sarah Lennox. Napier took up active service in the army aged 17 and went on to serve as a British General and Commander-in-Chief of the army of the East India Company. In 1842, at the age of 60, Napier was appointed Major General to command British forces in India and led several victorious campaigns, which culminated in his conquest of the entire Sindh Province. In recognition of his service, Napier was appointed Knight Grand Cross in the military division of the Order of the Bath.

This portrait was created posthumously in 1855 and follows the primary version by Edwin Williams which is held in the Indian Army Memorial Room, National Army Museum in Sandhurst (acc. no NAM. 1969-12-16).
