Footnotes

The present lot shows the crest associated with the arms of the FARQUHAR family who in the 18th century were of Gairioch, Aberdeenshire and later of Polesworth, Surrey. Earlier in 1672-7 the origin of the family is recorded as Gillmylnscroft, Ayrshire. Notably Robert FARQUHAR (1699-1787) of Aberdeenshire, was the Minister at Gairioch and with his wife Katherine TURING (1711-1798) they had issue eleven children, amongst whom their son Walter FARQUHAR (1738-1819) in 1796, a surgeon in London and settled at Polesworth Surrey was created Baronet of Cadogan. He had earlier in 1786 had an exemplification of earlier family arms, that includes the crest here, matriculated by the Lyon Court in Scotland. Notably the Registers at the Lyon Court do not record the pre-1786 version of the crest. Walter FARQUHAR in 1771 married the widow Anne HARVIE nee STEVENSON (1738-1793).

The crest here may be intended to be that used by Walter FARQUHAR later 1st Baronet and may at the time of assay 1777 have been the crest associated with the earlier arms.

The blazon of the crest: an eagle rising proper.
