Footnotes

This appears to be the crest associated with the many grants and exemplifications of arms of the BURRELL family. In various grants they are identified as being of: Millfield and Brome Park, Northumberland; Baron Gwydyr; Woodland, Devon; Valentine House, Essex Baronetcy; Beckenham, Kent; Dowsby, Lincolnshire. Further owing to the branch held in the hand being displayed with a twist, one family branch can be identified who were prolific users of the crest in this configuration and would suggest that a likely owner of the item was Sir Charles Merrick BURRELL (1774-1862) 3rd Raymond Baronet of Valentine House and his wife Frances Wyndham ILIVE (1789-1848) illegitimate daughter of the notorious George WYNDHAM (1751-1837) 3rd Earl of Egremont of Petworth House, Sussex. They were married in 1808.

Charles Merrick BURRELL was born at Golden Square, London and died at his country mansion Kneep Castle, Sussex. He was the son of Sir William BURRELL (1732-1796) 2nd Baronet and his wife Sophia RAYMOND daughter and coheir of Sir Charles RAYMOND (1713-1788) of Valentine House, Ilford, Essex. He was an elected MP for New Shoreham from 1802.

The blazon of the crest: an arm embowed proper holding in the hand a branch of laurel vert.
