This is the full armorial for Richard Colley WELLESLEY (1760-1842) created in 1797 Baron Wellesley in the Peerage of Great Britain and in 1799 Marquess Wellesley of Norragh in the Peerage of Ireland. He was born at Dangan Castle co. Meath, Ireland the son of Garret WELLESLEY (1735-1781) 1st Earl of Mornington (created 1760) an Anglo-Irish politician and composer by his wife Anne HILL-TREVOR (1742-1831) daughter of Arthur HILL-TREVOR (1694-1771) 1st Viscount Dungannon. He was an Anglo-Irish politician and statesman serving as an MP in the Irish Parliament and later in the English Parliament. He served as Governor of India 1798-1808. The engraving shows the shield within a Garter ring. He was made one of the earliest Knights of St Patrick (1783?) and was in 1812 made a Knight of the Garter. This would indicate that the engraving was made in 1812 or later, after the assay of 1810. He was twice married: firstly in 1794 Hyacinthe- Gabriel ROLAND (died 1816); secondly in 1825 the widow Marianne PATTERSON nee CATON (died 1853).

The blazon:
quarterly of four – 1,4: gules, a cross argent between five plates saltirewise in each quarter (Wellesley); 2,3: or, a lion rampant gules ducally gorged of the field (Colley) – an inescutcheon: purpure, charged with an estoile radiated wavy between eight spots of the royal tiger in pairs saltirewise or, representing the Standard of the Sultan of Mysore (an Honourable Augmentation, by Sign Manual in Dec 1790). All encircled by a Garter ribbon with motto.

The Supporters:
dexter - a lion gules holding in the off-paw the Republican Flag of France inscribed "Republic of France" within a wreath of laurel the staff broken all proper; sinister - the Royal Tiger Guard vert spotted or supporting in the off-paw the Mysore Standard Staff also broken all proper. Both supporters ducally crowned and chained Gold.

The Coronet: Marquess

The Motto: PORRO UNUM EST NECESSARIUM
