Footnotes

The above lot was a gift to Lady Glenconner from her mother Lady Elizabeth Mary York, 5th Countess of Leicester, in the hope that it would rid her daughter of her fear of mice, alas it didn't.

This model is in the style of English eighteenth century enamel bonbonnières, made in Birmingham or South Staffordshire where the subject matter is usually mirrored by the scene portrayed on the flat cover. These usually depict the same animal.
