A Framed Lock of George Washington's Hair

descended from the son of Alexander Hamilton
Several strands of hair knotted and sealed with wax to a paper card inscribed "General Washington's Hair / Given to Mrs. Eames / by James A. Hamilton / [Given] by Mrs. Eames to A.P. Gordon Cumming / [Given] by him to Clement Ferguson", mounted below engraved print of George Washington, together with an engraving of Martha Washington in matching c. 1885 glazed frame, framed 12 1/2 x 10 1/2 in.

James Alexander Hamilton (1788-1878) of New York, son of Alexander Hamilton, to Frances "Fanny" Campbell Eames (1819-1890), wife of Hon. Charles Eames, of Washington, DC.
Frances Eames to son-in-law Alastair Penrose Gordon-Cumming (1853-1913) of Washington, DC, and Sykesville, Maryland.
A.P. Gordon-Cumming to Clement Ferguson (1814-1895), a Scottish-Irish politician and numismatist with residences in San Francisco, New York, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine. Possibly inherited by his wife, Mary Pierce Van Bokkelen Ferguson (1834-1912), widow of George Augustus Van Bokkelen (1831-61).

Note
A typed exhibition label affixed to reverse inscribed "Portrait of Geo. Washington with a very precious lock of hair preserved for many years in the family of Alexander Hamilton, with a certificate of its descent to the present owner, Clement Ferguson."
