A Fine Federal Inlaid and Figured Mahogany Pembroke Table

attributed to the shop of Elbert Anderson, New York, New York, c. 1795
Single-board crotch mahogany top with rounded ends, joined on both sides with sunken hinges to demilune leaves opening to form oval table surface with continuous string and band inlays in blonde and ebonized wood, the fixed top joined with pocket screws to a conforming apron with horizontally-laminated bowed drawer fronts, one false and the other dovetailed to a shallow poplar and pine case, both retaining period hardware, the fixed apron rails with box-jointed wedge bracket to support open leaves, raised on square tapered legs with exposed corners of stiles inlaid with sand-burnt "bookend" inlay above shaded bellflower motif in the cusped string border continuing to crossbanded cuffs, partial pencil inscription "M-- / Pryor" on bottom of fixed top, closed, 53cm wide, 81cm deep, 71cm high (21 3/4in wide, 32in deep, 28 1/4in high).
