Cased Surveyor's Compass with Stake and Chain
Ellis & Isaac Chandlee, Nottingham, Maryland, c. 1800
The brass underplate inscribed "Ellis & Ifaac Chandlee / Nottingham" on the guide vane end, mounting on a hardwood post with the bottom tapered to a point sheathed in iron, which balances on a later floor stand; includes brass and steel surveyor's chain with brass tag impressed with mark of J.C. Chesterman of Sheffield, England; the compass, detachable vanes, key, and chain stored in a custom cedar chest, compass wd. 13 3/4, dp. 5 1/2, ht. 7 3/4 in.; mounted stake ht. 54 in.
