Seven Carved Mahogany Scroll-back Side Chairs

six attributed to Duncan Phyfe (Scottish-American, c. 1770-1854), New York, New York, c. 1810
Assembled group includes set of five stained mahogany side chairs with reeded cross-banisters embellished at intersection with applied lozenge molding, the shaped tablet crest rail relief-carved with a thunderbolt and ribbon motif that recurs on all seven of the chairs, including one with lighter finish and a rosette ornament on the cross-banisters, and one 20th-century reproduction with double cross-banisters and a leather-upholstered slip seat, all but the latter with compass seat frames jointed with integral rabbet for the slip seats and chamfered at bottom edge, conforming trapezoidal chair blocks cut with dados to receive the front legs, and two parallel flat brackets blind-dovetailed to the front and rear seat rails, three of the slip seats with later striped silk upholstery, and three with earlier silk damask upholstery, 45cm wide, 50cm deep, 81cm high (18 3/4in wide, 20in deep, 32 7/8in high). Seat ht. to top of rail, 16 3/4 in.
