Chippendale Cherry Bonnet-top Chest on Chest
Connecticut, mid-18th century
The upper case crested with deep cove molding applied to front and returns of a broken pediment with two circular voids centering a carved finial with pinwheel-carved reserve below tapered plinth supporting replaced finial, slightly larger than those mounted on reeded pilasters at the corner, the back and sides of pediment fully enclosed by pine boards, above single-board pine top dovetailed to the two-board sides of case and faced with carved cherry tympanum sawn and fitted with blind-dovetailed drawer dividers to conform with top row of one large pinwheel-carved drawer flanked by short drawers, all resting on a cherry drawer blade tenoned to sides and butted against a deep dustboard of white pine, above three full graduated drawers of cherry and white pine, the case fully enclosed by two rabbeted horizontal backboards and a single board across bottom; resting inside ogee molding applied to the unfinished top of bottom case, which contains three graduated drawers, the lowest exceptionally deep, with back and bottom enclosed as above, surrounded by applied molded and raised on stout ogee feet with integral shaped brackets on front and sides, truncated at back edge, including finial, 104cm wide, 55cm deep, 205cm high (41 1/4in wide, 22in deep, 81in high).
