Chippendale Mahogany Chest of Drawers
Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1770
Single-board top of figured mahogany with continuous thumb-molded edge along serpentine front, attenuated rounded corners, and ogee returns, overhanging case of four conforming graduated drawers retaining original brasses, the solid ends half blind-dovetailed at back edge, the front edge chamfered and cockbead-molded in alignment with three drawer blades and base of mahogany and pine, the latter having conforming thumb- and fillet-molded edge, sharply pointed at the front corners to conform with the stout ogee legs on ball-and-claw feet, which are truncated at the rear, reinforced with shaped cyma-curved knee blocks and centering a shaped cyma pendant molding, refinished, 99cm wide, 55cm deep, 81cm high (39 1/4in wide, 22in deep, 32 1/2in high).
