Footnotes
Provenance
Descended in the family from the consignors' grandparents, who owned and ran the Falmouth Playhouse on Cape Cod from 1955-1983.
Note
Cahoon borrowed the title and composition from a popular Federal engraving in the Prodigal Son series by Connecticut artist Amos Doolittle (1754-1832), replacing the three women in the scene with topless mermaids. A more faithful copy of Doolittle's "The Prodigal Son Returns" sold at Bourgeault-Horan Antiquarians, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 2013.
