N.B.
Irving Ramsey Wiles was one of the most successful and sought-after American portraitists of the early 20th century. He was born in Utica, New York, and studied in New York and Paris under James Carroll Beckwith, William Merritt Chase, and Carolus-Duran. (Carolus-Duran was also the mentor of John Singer Sargent, and clear similarities can be seen between Sargent's and Wiles's portraits.) During his career, Wiles worked both as an illustrator for magazines like Harper's and Scribner's and as a portrait artist.
The present painting is a charming, vibrant example of Wiles's work in still life. According to Geoffrey K. Fleming, the Executive Director & CEO of the Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania, the present work was likely originally much larger, and has since been cut down either by the artist or a later hand.
