N.B.
Joan and William Shurcliff's 1988 draft catalogue dates the present portrait to 1908. Several charcoal studies that appear to relate to this work are in Hopkinson's 1908 sketchbook in the collection of the Archives of American Art.

The present portrait depicts Thornton Lothrop Coolidge (1906-1936) at around age 1. Thornton was the son of Amy Lothrop Peabody Coolidge (1869-1954) and Dr. Algernon Lowell Coolidge (1860-1939), the Chief of the Department of Laryngology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Laryngology at Harvard Medical School. Thornton was an accomplished figure skater in his adolescence, winning the 1927 U.S. Junior Pairs title, the 1929 America's Senior Pairs, and the 1929 North American Championships bronze medal. He graduated from Harvard College in 1928 and went on to pursue acting before passing away from an illness at age 29.
