N.B.
Self-taught artist Levi Wells Prentice was born on a farm in northwestern New York and began his career traveling throughout and painting the landscape of the Adirondack Mountains. After establishing a studio in Syracuse, New York, he turned from landscape to still life painting, producing the meticulously detailed and remarkably realistic works for which he is best known today. His still lifes reflect an emphasis on contrast - contrast of texture, color, and shape - and on the interaction of manmade objects, such as a basket or table, and nature. Prentice's works are held in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
