N.B.
Edward Henry Potthast was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied in Cincinnati, Munich, and Paris, initially pursuing a career in lithography which he continued until the 1890s, when he shifted to painting. By the time he moved from Cincinnati to New York City in 1895, Potthast was specializing in beach scenes and harbor views, for which he found a thriving market in the New England art colonies of Gloucester, Rockport, Cape Cod, and Ogunquit.
