N.B.
William Hart - the grandfather of E.B. White - was born in Paisley, Scotland, and moved to Albany, New York in 1831. He began his career decorating the side panels of coaches and painting portraits, but by 1853 he had shifted to painting primarily landscapes both abroad in Scotland and in New York. He became the president of the Brooklyn Academy of Design in 1865 and of the American Watercolor Society in 1870. Hart's landscapes were highly influenced by the Hudson River School in their focus on light, atmosphere, and open vistas, and the present work is a charming example of the cow paintings for which Hart was well known. Bucolic depictions of cattle grazing were very popular among 19th-century collectors and works by Hart were particularly sought after.
