N.B.
Charles Edwin Lewis Green spent his career in Lynn, Massachusetts, painting the landscapes and shores of his home state. Green was greatly influenced by the Barbizon school of painters, as well as by the Dutch Old Masters, and mostly painted en plein-air. The sketchy forms, loose brushstrokes, and subdued palette of the present work reflect the influence of Barbizon painters like Théadore Rousseau, Charles-François Daubigny, Jules Dupré, and Jean-François Millet. The figures, dwarfed by the thick, looming canopy, are practically indistinguishable from the foliage itself, their forms bleeding into the woods around them.
