N.B.
Louis Aston Knight was born in Paris, son of expatriate artist Daniel Ridgway Knight. He lived, studied, and exhibited in Europe throughout the early 20th century, winning a number of medals and awards for his work. In the 1910s he developed a larger following in the United States and started working and exhibiting there as well. Knight was best known for his romantic depictions of French cottages and gardens in the area around his home of Beaumont-le-Roger, France. Magny - the location of the present painting - can be found just south of this area. The present work shows the spontaneous, loose influence of the Impressionists working in France during Knight's career, including Claude Monet, whom Knight frequently visited at his home in Giverny.
