N.B.
Edward Darley Boit was born in Boston and attended the Boston Latin school before studying at Harvard College and Harvard Law School. While living in Paris he became close friends with another American expatriate artist, John Singer Sargent. Many of us might have seen other members of Boit's family before: Sargent's picture of Boit's four daughters and his portrait of Boit's wife, Mary Louisa Cushing, both hang at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit is one of Sargent's most iconic and enigmatic works. It was painted in Boit's fashionable Paris apartment and depicts the four girls carefully arranged within the shadowy, liminal space of the entry hall, interrupted in the flow of their daily lives.
