N.B.
William McKendree Snyder was born in Liberty, Indiana. His father was a Methodist minister who joined the Union Army in 1861 at the same time as his son, he as a chaplain and Snyder as a drummer boy. After the war Snyder studied first in Cincinnati before moving out east to train under Albert Bierstadt, William Morris Hunt, and George Inness, among others. In 1875 Snyder moved back to Indiana and began painting the Indiana landscapes for which he became best known.
