N.B.
William Pierce Stubbs was born in Orrington, Maine, the son of a sea captain. The influence of a youth spent on and around the ocean is clear in the detail and knowledge displayed in his marine paintings, which capture the power and spirit of 19th-century New England shipping. Stubbs had a prolific and highly regarded career as a marine painter in Boston and in Maine, and his works are now held in many museum collections including the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, and the Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester.
