John Fabian Carlson was born in Sweden and emigrated with his family to the United States at age 9. He grew up in Buffalo, New York, and studied at the Art Students League of Buffalo. He became particularly renown for his winter landscapes. By 1905 he was regularly exhibiting in Buffalo and Woodstock, New York, as well as in Chicago at the Art Institute and the Swedish-American Exhibition. He was director of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting from 1912 to 1918 and co-directed the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs alongside Robert Reid beginning that same year. In 1922 he founded the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting in Woodstock, New York, where he taught until his death in 1945.
