Aldro Thompson Hibbard's paintings are some of the most well-known and beloved depictions of New England. Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Hibbard was raised in Dorchester and spent his summers on Cape Cod. He studied art first at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and then at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he was taught by artists in the American Impressionist movement. After graduating and spending a few years abroad in Europe, Hibbard settled in Massachusetts, spending his summers in Rockport and his winters in Vermont.
Hibbard is most well known for his winter landscapes. In the present work, he effectively and efficiently captures the many hues of sun and shadow and the heaviness of the snow-laden pine boughs. His spontaneous, light brushstrokes show the influence of both the American and European Impressionists with whom he studied, making his scenes feel immediate and active, just like the fleeting movement of light at different seasons and times of day. Hibbard paints with a true affection for the landscape in which he was raised to evoke a quintessentially New England vision.
