N.B.
Aldro Thompson Hibbard's paintings are some of the most well-known and beloved depictions of New England. Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Hibbard was raised in Dorchester and spent his summers on Cape Cod. He studied art first at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and then at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he was taught by artists in the American Impressionist movement. After graduating and spending a few years abroad in Europe, Hibbard settled in Massachusetts, spending his summers in Rockport and his winters in Vermont. The present work, most likely painted in Vermont, is a quiet, intimate scene. A solitary smoke shack is nestled among the mountains on a clear day in early spring; the inactive chimney, melting snow, and tapped tree at right suggests that we are in the first months of spring.
