Paul Sample was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and attended Dartmouth College. He studied art at the Art Students League of Los Angeles and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and joined the architecture faculty at the University of Southern California from 1926 until 1938. In 1938, he returned to New England and became artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College while living in Norwich, Vermont. Many of his most celebrated paintings depict the villages, fields, and mountains of rural New Hampshire and Vermont. Sample's works often align, in both style and subject matter, with the works of American Regionalist painters like Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry in their focus on small-town life and agricultural landscapes, and their use of clean lines and illustration-inspired compositions and colors.
