N.B.
Aldro Thompson Hibbard's paintings are some of the most well-known and beloved depictions of New England. Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Hibbard was raised in Dorchester and spent his summers on Cape Cod. He studied art first at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and then at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he was taught by artists in the American Impressionist movement. After graduating and spending a few years abroad in Europe, Hibbard settled in Massachusetts, spending his summers in Rockport and his winters in Vermont.
The present work depicts a seaside view from Monhegan Island, Maine. Monhegan Island was home to a thriving artistic scene and was the primary inspiration for generations of American artists, including George Bellows (1882-1925), Robert Henri (1865-1929), Edward Hopper (1882-1967), Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), and Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009). Another work in the present sale - Andrew Wyeth's John McCoy Painting - shows Martinsville, Maine, which is on the Maine coast just to the north of Monhegan Island.
