Frank Vining Smith was born in Whitman, Massachusetts, and studied first at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and then at the Central Ontario School of Design. He moved to Boston in around 1900 and worked as an artist for the Boston Journal and Boston Herald. He designed camouflage during World War I and only began his career as a full-time marine painter after the war. His first solo show was in 1924 at Oberlin College in Ohio.
