This work was commissioned in 1925 by Helen Clay Frick for the gardens of the Frick family's summer residence 'Eagle Rock' at Pride's Crossing in Beverly, Massachusetts. Completed and installed in June of 1926, Hoffman details in her correspondence with Helen Clay Frick that the work, which initially included a pedestal, would cost $9,000 and allow her to do four other castings of Neptune. The only other cast example of this work was sold at Sotheby's, New York, American Paintings, Drawings, and Sculptures, May 20, 1998, lot 135.
