Footnotes
N.B.
William Thompson Russell Smith was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and grew up in Pennsylvania. He spent time working as a commercial painter of signs and theater sets before moving to Philadelphia in 1935, where he began to produce the Hudson River School-inspired landscapes for which he is best known today. He exhibited these regularly throughout New England, including at the annual exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Russell Smith's children, Xanthus Russell Smith and Mary Russell Smith, both became painters as well.
