N.B.
William Guy Wall is considered a forerunner to the Hudson River School movement. He was born in Dublin and came to New York at age 20, where he quickly earned a following for his Hudson River Valley landscapes and his delicate watercolors. Wall was a founding member of the National Academy of Design and his work is held in the collections of the Hudson River Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. The present work displays the autumnal colors that are typical of the later generation of Hudson River paintings like Cropsey. Easy to miss among the trees' thick canopies and the shadowy forest is a deer fleeing from a pack of hunting dogs, just steps away from breaking the river's placid surface.
