N.B.
Born in Philadelphia, Edmund Darch Lewis studied with the German artist Paul Weber and painted throughout the northeast, including in the White Mountains and along the coast. He was greatly influenced by the Hudson River and Luminist schools, as reflected in his expansive, meticulously detailed, and richly illuminated works. The present work depicts a valley stream in the early autumn, the trees just turning from green to orange. Three birds emerge from around the bend, taking flight and soaring into the open sky, while a small village sits on a hilltop in the distance.
