N.B.
American Fauvist painter Louise Woodroofe was born in Champaign, Illinois, and studied at the University of Illinois and then Syracuse University. In 1925 she was featured alongside Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, and Mary Cassatt at the 32nd Annual Exhibition of American Art at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In the 1920s and '30s she painted in Gloucester alongside Jane Peterson, before spending a few decades traveling alongside the Ringling Brothers Circus painting the performances and performers. She later taught architecture at the University of Illinois as the first female engineering professor at the university; the Louise M. Woodroofe Prize at the University of Illinois is now awarded annually to an architecture student based on their graphic portfolio.
