N.B.
Jon F. Anderson, a previous owner of the current work, was Paul Cadmus's favorite model and recurs throughout his oeuvre. The present sketch is a preparatory study for Cadmus's 1971 David and Goliath, in which Anderson models as David and Cadmus as the decapitated Goliath. The painting was inspired by Caravaggio's depiction of the subject. Cadmus produced several studies for the finished painting, each of which show David in various seated positions and angles of recline, and the present version relates most closely to the sketch held at the Morgan Library (2005.48).
