N.B.
Paul Wonner was born in Tucson, Arizona, and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, soon becoming a prominent abstract expressionist painter in the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950s. His long-time partner, William Theophilus Brown, was another well-known abstract expressionist. By the 1960s Wonner had turned to primarily figural work and in the 1970s he began a series of hyper-realistic still lifes. Wonner's late work - after the turn of the century - primarily comprises intimate watercolor or gouache pictures of models, friends, and strangers. His work is held in numerous large collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
