N.B.
Joseph Stella was born in Italy and came to New York City in 1896, originally hoping to pursue a career in medicine like his brother (the former owner of the present work). He soon abandoned his medical studies, however, to study at the Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase. His early work comprised primarily realist drawings and illustration, focusing on urban life and the immigrant experience, but after spending a few years in Europe beginning in 1909, his work began to reflect the influence of the Fauvist, Cubist, and Futurist artists whom he encountered there. He returned to New York in 1913 and became close to other expatriates such as Albert Gleizes and Marcel Duchamp, participating alongside them in the 1913 Armory Show. Much of Stella's post-1913 oeuvre comprises depictions of the soaring New York City skyline and architecture that incorporate the styles and colors of Fauvism, Futurism, and Cubism.
