Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, Scott Prior has lived and worked in Massachusetts for decades, and is one of the founding members of the "Valley Realists". His vividly realized works depict daily life in New England, often capturing moments or scenes from his own life. Despite their everyday subject matter, his paintings evoke a subtle sense of unreality, transforming the landscapes, people, and places with which we are so familiar into nostalgic dreamscapes. The meticulous details and atmospheric light of House on a Highway create an intimate moment, immersing us in the memory of a mild, damp early fall day in Central Massachusetts. The work recalls Prior's sentiment that "in New England, we live in a world of changing seasons, which, I think, invites an almost sensual awareness of time and its effects. The New England landscape is small and intimate and directs our attention to things close at hand".
Prior's work is held in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, and the New Britain Museum of Art, Connecticut.
