Footnotes

N.B.
Robert Cardinal was born in Montréal, Canada, and moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, in the 1960s. His painting is deeply influenced by the works of Maxfield Parrish and Edward Hopper, as evidenced by his simple, evocative compositions that often omit human figures and foreground solitary structures. Cardinal now lives in North Truro, Massachusetts, and paints alongside his son, Julian Cardinal (also represented in the present sale).

Cardinal's work embraces the quiet, contemplative beauty of New England's coastal and rural landscapes, often contrasting isolated manmade structures with the natural environment. The present work depicts a silent harbor on Martha's Vineyard. An almost ethereal light illuminates the houses, placing them in stark contrast to the otherworldly deep purple of the sky. The monochromatic passages - the houses' sidings, the sky, the grasses - and tonal contrasts evoke a Hopper-esque sense of loneliness and isolation, along with a keen interest in the effects of light at different times of day. The viewer is immersed in an atmosphere of solitude, stillness, and contemplation.
