N.B.
The present work is a depiction of a scene from the 1929 musical comedy film Gold Diggers of Broadway, directed by Roy Del Ruth and starring Ann Pennington, Winnie Lightner and Nick Lucas. This is a wonderful example of Marsh's early illustration in New York, while he was contribution to the New York Daily News and The New Yorker. It shows the influence of Marsh's mentors and friends John Sloan, Thomas Hart Benton, and George Luks.
The collectors' stamp on this work is from the collection of William Benton, a previous senator from Connecticut, who owned many of Marsh's works. Benton met Marsh while the two were students at Yale; they became close friends and worked on the Yale Record humor magazine together.
