N.B.
Edward Moran was one of the most important marine painters of his lifetime, and a prominent figure in the Philadelphia art scene. Born to a family of weavers in Lancashire, England, Moran emigrated to Philadelphia in 1844. Soon afterward, he came into contact with the painter Paul Weber, who encouraged him to pursue painting. He established studios in Philadelphia, New York, and Paris, often working alongside his brother Thomas Moran (who went on to become a well-known painter in his own right).
The present work depicts a group of fishing dories in a quiet harbor at dawn. A dearth of detail in the work - the boats, figures, and distant mountains all being reduced to silhouettes - gives the scene a quiet, tranquil atmosphere.
