Little is known about Alexander Loemans, but he was likely born in the Netherlands and trained perhaps in France. He spent most of his career in Ontario, Manitoba, Boston, and Minnesota; many of his works were painted along the Hudson River, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or along the Minnesota River. He likely spent periods of time in South America - perhaps Peru - given that some of his paintings depict tropical landscapes.
The present work includes many of the elements typical in Loemans's paintings: tiny figures dwarfed by looming, distant mountains, a thundering waterfall, and an expansive grey sky. The dramatic scene recalls the sweeping visions of Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Cole; it is possible that Loemans's work does not depict a real place at all, but rather an amalgamation of impressive elements that create a sublime, monumental vista.
