N.B.
Edward Moran was one of the most important marine painters of his lifetime, and a prominent figure in the Philadelphia art scene. Born to a family of weavers in Lancashire, England, Moran emigrated to Philadelphia in 1844. Soon afterward, he came into contact with the painter Paul Weber, who encouraged him to pursue painting. He established studios in Philadelphia, New York, and Paris, often working alongside his brother Thomas Moran (who went on to become a well-known painter in his own right).
In the present seascape, a fishing boat struggles against rough waves as it heads home from a day at sea. The pink-and-gold sunset sky offers a stark contrast in mood from the roiling, dark ocean and the cacophonous scene below, with the bobbing bell buoy, swooping seagulls, and fishermen braced against the mast lines.
